"TREKKIES,” a documentary
about the fans of "Star Trek,” is a look at the
universe's most fervent fans, a document of a pop culture phenomenon
unparalleled in society. Get ready to beam up to a galaxy where
autograph hounds abound, dentists drill in Federation garb and the
debate over "Trekkies" vs. "Trekkers" rages on.
Denise Crosby of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” hosts this
often-hilarious documentary about the “Star Trek” "fan-nomenon."
The filmmakers interviewed
hundreds of devoted fans and such “Star Trek” cast members as
Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, James
Doohan, George Takei, Levar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Kate
Mulgrew and Brent Spiner. They also talked to some of the creative
forces behind "Star Trek": Co-Creator/Executive Producer Jeri
Taylor, Writer/Co-Executive producer Brannon Braga,
Academy-Award-Winning Make-Up Supervisor Michael Westmore, creator of
the Klingon language Dr. Marc Okrand...and many others. The film creates
an entertaining and endearing portrait of the landmark series that has
touched the lives of people around the world.
Director Roger Nygard met Denise
Crosby in 1991 when he cast her in his directorial debut, HIGH STRUNG, a
low-budget comedy written by and starring Steve Oedekerk. Over the years
they stayed in touch, and often talked about the idea of doing a
documentary about "Star Trek" fans. Denise hatched the idea
after being invited to attend "Star Trek" conventions and
meeting fans first-hand. The idea seemed so obvious, they were surprised
nobody had done it yet. The idea became a reality when the producers at
Neo Motion Pictures financed the endeavor.
